About Portland

A Great Place to Learn and Live
It's easy to fall in love with a place like Portland, Oregon. Dubbed the Rose City, Portland is one of the greenest, most beautiful cities on the West Coast. Money magazine even put it at the top of its "Best Places to Live" list in December 2000.

Situated at the junction of the Willamette and Columbia rivers, Portland is a marvel of urban planning, with a rejuvenated downtown and a laid back, historical atmosphere. Its metropolitan core offers a wealth of things to see and do, such as shops, art galleries, sporting events, and cultural festivals.

Portland also features dozens of urban parks and green spaces, including Forest Park, one of the country's largest forested municipal parks within a city's limits.

High above the city is the internationally known Rose Garden, where more than 500 varieties of roses have been continuously cultivated since 1917.

Seasonal rain showers never dampen this city's sense of whimsy and wonder. Dozens of family events and festivals take place throughout the year—come rain or shine.

Fewer than 80 miles west of Portland is the magnificent Oregon coast. Thousands visit the coast year-round to shop, surf, hike, fly kites, watch whales, build sand castles, and beach comb.

Just a few miles east of Portland is the breathtakingly beautiful Columbia Gorge National Scenic Park Area. This area features verdant green forests, hiking trails, waterfalls, and snow-capped peaks.

Mt. Hood sits just 50 miles east of Portland, where Timberline Ski Lodge serves the mountain's five ski areas and offers the only lift-serviced summer skiing in the country.
